Form 990 is a United States Internal Revenue Service form that provides the public with financial information about a nonprofit organization.
Most Overseas Charities post the famous Form 990 on their websites (under financials). There is a world of information there, including the sources and amounts of their annual revenue and how it is spent. In particular, it reveals the amount spent on administration and on programs overseas. It also displays the salaries of the top 5 officials in the organization.
Some of the later will surprise---if not shock---the reader. Most of the top Charities who work overseas pay their top staff between 200,000 dollars and 600,000 dollars annually.
Now, I do not believe you need to be poor to help the poor and I can tell you that managing a large Overseas Charity is very difficult work. But in the end...that middle-class family of 4 or 5 which has a total family income of 60,000 dollars does have to question whether they should support Charities whose managers who make 5-10 times the donor's income; those same managers who profess continuously that their only goal in life is to help the impoverished.
So...We do not need the managers of Overseas Charities to go to work in sackcloth....but we do need some balance restored.
And BTW....you all should know that there are organizations such as the Jesuits...the Mennonites ..and the Quakers who ''walk the talk".
